John Reed, the author of Ten Days that Shook the World, once said that Lenin was the most loved and the most hated person alive. He was loved by tens of millions who wanted to change society, but hated by the ruling class and their apologists.

As the creator of the Bolshevik Party and leader of the Russian Revolution, Lenin was a man who changed the world and translated the ideas of Marxism into reality.
Today, one hundred years after his death, the bourgeois historians continue to vilify and slander Lenin’s life and ideas. This book sets out to definitively answer these distortions, putting forward a defence of the real Lenin and the ideas he stood for. Given the ongoing capitalist crisis, his ideas are gaining an increasingly wide echo. In so many ways, Lenin is more relevant today than ever before.

Over two volumes, this book traces Lenin’s life and work, drawing on the colossal heritage left behind in his own writings. This book also features an appendix of Krupskaya’s writings on Lenin, a chronology, and over 250 images.

Volume Two spans from Lenin’s return to Russia in April 1917 to his death in 1924. In this period, the working class conquered power in October 1917 and struggled to survive in a country racked by civil war and imperialist intervention. It ends with Lenin’s last fight against the emerging Soviet bureaucracy.

“The Bolivarian Revolution, if it is not to be reduced to an empty phrase, must mean the socialist revolution in Venezuela. And the working people of Venezuela must inscribe on their banner the aim of the Socialist United States of Latin America. That is the only perspective that can guarantee the final victory.”

The Bolivarian Revolution transformed Venezuela. The corrupt landowners had lands confiscated. Empty factories were expropriated. A mass programme of housing, education and healthcare was underway.

For the first time in their history, the Venezuelan working masses had a say in their lives. The revolution lit both a fire in their hearts and a beacon to the masses of Latin America. It was for this crime that Hugo Chávez attracted the ire of the “devil” in the White House.

Writing as these events unfolded, Alan Woods explains how the outright sabotage of the oligarchy, the pressure of liberal and reformist elements in the PSUV, and the crushing domination of US imperialism put a brake on the movement.

The Bolivarian Revolution remained incomplete. Had the movement been taken to its logical conclusion, with the abolition of capitalism and the expropriation of the oligarchy, the last quarter-century in Latin America would look profoundly different. Instead, the gains of the revolution have been undone, and US imperialism is once again licking its lips in anticipation of the oil and riches that lie beneath the continent.

This book serves not only as an analysis of the Venezuelan Revolution, but as an illustration of the internationalist duty of Marxists to explain and point to the way forward through events. Even more pertinently, lessons should be learnt from the limitations of the Bolivarian Revolution in order to arm a new generation of class fighters.

The story of the Spanish revolution of the 1930s is quite well known to most people on the left, but there is a surprising level of ignorance concerning the events that occurred subsequently. History did not cease with the victory of Franco in 1939. And the story of how the Franco dictatorship was eventually brought down by the revolutionary movement of the Spanish workers is an inspiring one.

Under the most difficult and dangerous conditions, Spanish workers launched a strike wave, which, in its intensity and duration, has no parallel anywhere. There was nothing remotely like this in Hitler’s Germany, Mussolini’s Italy or Salazar’s Portugal. This was a genuine revolution, which could and should have gone far further than it did. If it did not finally succeed, that was no fault of the working class. The Spanish revolution of the 1970s was shamefully betrayed by the leaders of the communist and socialist parties, who entered into an agreement with former fascists in order halt the movement in its tracks.

Alan Woods participated personally in the last phase of this struggle and was a witness to some of its most decisive moments. Using a wealth of documentary material from the time and also new interviews with key participants in the events, he tears away the thick veil of lies, myths and half-truths to reveal what actually occurred.

With new struggles and challenges on the order of the day in Spain and the rest of the world, it is the duty of all conscious workers and revolutionary youth to study the lessons of the past as a necessary precondition for victory in the future. This book is an important contribution to a necessary learning process and is obligatory reading for anyone who is interested in the struggle for socialism today.

Ted Grant was a well-known figure in the international Marxist movement. He had a significant impact on British politics. When he died all the most important newspapers carried extensive obituaries that recognised this fact. This is a remarkable work that comprehensively covers the development of Ted’s life and ideas, starting from his early family background in Johannesburg right up to his death in London in 2006 at the age of 93.

From his earliest youth in South Africa Ted Grant dedicated his life to the struggle for the emancipation of the working class. Moving to Britain in 1934 to seek new horizons, within a decade he had become the leading theoretician of the Trotskyist movement.

The book deals with the launch of the Fourth International and Ted’s battle to defend the ideas of Trotsky, which brought him into conflict with the leaders of the International after the Second World War. It explains the important theoretical questions and debates of this period and it outlines Ted Grant’s important theoretical contribution to Marxism.

Ted was the founder and theoretical inspirer of the Militant Tendency, which Michael Crick once described as the fifth political party in Britain. The book traces the rise and fall of Militant. It provides a fascinating insight into a subject that remains a closed book to most political analysts even now. This is a truly amazing story of a truly amazing man, told with style, colour and wit. At the end you will feel that you have known Ted Grant all your life.

The declarations of Hugo Chávez in favour of socialism sparked an important debate in Venezuela and internationally. However, some have concluded that the “old” ideas of Marxism are no longer valid and that it is necessary to invent a completely new and original theory of “Socialism of the 21st Century.” This book is a reply to that view – expressed by Heinz Dieterich among others – and a defence of the fundamental ideas of Marxism and scientific socialism against these revisionist arguments.

Alan Woods’ new book sharply criticizes the ideas of reformist writers like Dieterich, who assert that socialism can be built simply by carrying out reforms within the confines of the capitalist system while maintaining the structures of the bourgeois state apparatus.

Reformism or Revolution explains that it is impossible to reform capitalism, that it is necessary to build the revolutionary party, mobilize the working class, dismantle the bourgeois state apparatus and nationalize the key levers of the economy.

The book also explains and defends the views of Marxists on: Philosophy and Science, Historical Materialism, the English and French Revolutions, Marxist Economics, the Economics of Socialism of the 21st Century, the question of Socialism vs. Stalinism, the State and Revolution, the Permanent Revolution, the Future of the Cuban Revolution, the Venezuelan Revolution and more.

A Selection of Writings on Dialectical Materialism by Marx, Engels, Lenin, Trotsky, Plekhanov, and Luxemburg, and Alan Woods. Edited by John Peterson with an Introduction by Alan Woods.

On the bicentennial of his birth, Karl Marx’s ideas are more relevant than ever. While he is perhaps best known for his writings on economics and history, anyone who wishes to have a fully rounded understanding of his method must strive to master dialectical materialism, which itself resulted from an assiduous study and critique of Hegel.

Dialectical materialism is the logic of motion, development, and change. By embracing contradiction instead of trying to write it out of reality, dialectics allows Marxists to approach processes as they really are, not as we would like them to be. In this way we can understand and explain the essential class interests at stake in our fight against capitalist exploitation and oppression.

At every decisive turning point in history, scientific socialists must go back to basics. Marxist theory represents the synthesized experience, historical memory, and guide to action of the working class. The Revolutionary Philosophy of Marxism aims to arm the new generation of revolutionary socialists with these essential ideas.

The book contains:
