“The new edition of Stalin has added to and enriched the vast arsenal off Marxist theory left behind by Leon Trotsky.” – Esteban Volkov, Trotsky’s Grandson

Wellred Books proudly presents a work eighty years in the making, Leon Trotsky’s unfinished masterpiece: Stalin.

Painstakingly restored over a ten year period

In consultation with the Harvard archives and the English, French and Russian editions

The most complete version ever in any language

100,000 more words than the 1946 original – a 30% increase

Malamuth’s political distortions removed

On 20th August 1940 Trotsky’s life was brutally ended when a Stalinist agent brought an ice pick crashing down on his head. Among the works left unfinished was the second part of his biography of Stalin.

Trotsky’s Stalin is unique in Marxist literature in that it attempts to explain some of the most decisive events of the 20th century, not just in terms of epoch-making economic and social transformations, but in the individual psychology of one of the protagonists in a great historical drama. It is a fascinating study of the way in which the peculiar character of an individual, his personal traits and psychology, interacts with great events.

How did it come about that Stalin, who began his political life as a revolutionary and a Bolshevik, ended as a tyrant and a monster? Was this something pre-ordained by genetic factors or childhood upbringing? Drawing on a mass of carefully assembled material from his personal archives and many other sources, Trotsky provides the answer to these questions.

In the present edition we have brought together all the material that was available from the Trotsky archives in English and supplemented it with additional material translated from Russian. It is the most complete version of the book that has ever been published. On the eve of the centenary of the October Revolution, we believe that Trotsky’s Stalin is relevant and inspiring as never before.

A Selection of Writings on Dialectical Materialism by Marx, Engels, Lenin, Trotsky, Plekhanov, and Luxemburg, and Alan Woods. Edited by John Peterson with an Introduction by Alan Woods.

On the bicentennial of his birth, Karl Marx’s ideas are more relevant than ever. While he is perhaps best known for his writings on economics and history, anyone who wishes to have a fully rounded understanding of his method must strive to master dialectical materialism, which itself resulted from an assiduous study and critique of Hegel.

Dialectical materialism is the logic of motion, development, and change. By embracing contradiction instead of trying to write it out of reality, dialectics allows Marxists to approach processes as they really are, not as we would like them to be. In this way we can understand and explain the essential class interests at stake in our fight against capitalist exploitation and oppression.

At every decisive turning point in history, scientific socialists must go back to basics. Marxist theory represents the synthesized experience, historical memory, and guide to action of the working class. The Revolutionary Philosophy of Marxism aims to arm the new generation of revolutionary socialists with these essential ideas.

The book contains:

Theses on Feuerbach by Karl Marx

Marx’s Revolution in Philosophy by Alan Woods

Leon Trotsky’s Writings on Britain span one of the most tumultuous periods in British history. The first decades of the 20th century were a time of crisis on all fronts for British capitalism. The country was rapidly sinking to a second-rate position among the world powers. Violent eruptions of class struggle shook capitalist rule to its very foundations. Amidst all this, the Marxists were striving to build a mass revolutionary party as the precondition of capitalism’s overthrow.

These writings were intended to assist the communists of the time to achieve their historic task. The same task is posed before us once more today. The thread of history is being re-tied, and Britain is once more moving towards revolutionary crises. This collection is indispensable for the Marxists who must rise to face this challenge.

Trotsky has a profound affinity for his subject, which he brings to bear on a remarkable range of questions: from the history, psychology, philosophy and morality of the British ruling class; to Britain’s revolutionary traditions going back to Chartism and the English Revolution; to the 1926 General Strike, and the questions of revolutionary strategy and tactics that the Marxists faced in the stormy decade of the 1930s.

This book includes all three volumes in a single edition, and features a new introduction by Rob Sewell, author of Chartist Revolution and In the Cause of Labour: A History of British Trade Unionism.

“In a word, if in the pacific and ‘organic’ period (before the war) one could still live on the revenue from a few ready-made abstractions, in our time each new event forcefully brings home the most important law of the dialectic: The truth is always concrete.” — Trotsky

The inter-war years were a time of deep crisis, class struggle and revolutionary opportunities.

The economic crisis produced a crisis of democracy itself. The ruling class, with nothing to offer, ran out of means to keep the workers at bay. As Trotsky explained, under the intensity of the class struggle and international conflict, “the fuses of democracy blow out”.

What followed was a succession of Bonapartist regimes — i.e. military-police dictatorships — each paving the way for Hitler.

Trotsky, expelled by Stalin from the Communist International and hounded across the globe, fought to arm revolutionaries with this perspective: a Marxist understanding of the crisis, the rise of Bonapartism and fascism, and the only road forward — to win the confidence of the masses and prepare for power.

In the writings on Germany and France included in this volume, Trotsky sought to educate communists in the method of Marxism — how to analyse the world and determine the correct tactical line.

After the Second World War, Ted Grant, following in Trotsky’s footsteps, explained the rise of Mussolini in Italy and the British Blackshirts, the capitalist’s backing of these gangs, and how workers can mobilise to smash them. He insisted on the need to analyse post-war Europe concretely, and not rely on “ready-made abstractions”.

These selected works illustrate the fundamental skill every revolutionary must master: learning to apply the Marxist method, and use it to explain the world in order to change it. In our time, we face again a deepening crisis of capitalism. Trotsky’s and Grant’s writings arm us for the battles ahead.
